چکیده

Effect of age, gender and BMI on the diameter and velocity of portal vein: All the nutrient rich blood from the GIT flows into the portal vein which determines the anatomical division of the hepatic lobes.1,2 The length of the portal vein is of surgical importance which is often cut down to link with the other vessels in interventional procedures like liver transplantation, trans hepatic portal vein embolization and pancreatectomy.3-5 It is an established fact that the normal hepatopetal flow in portal vein is affected in diseased individuals but it can also vary considerably in normal individuals making it a strong predictor for future portal vein diseases.2,3,6 Several studies have been performed to establish the normal upper limits of the portal vein diameter (PVD) but these values vary according to the sonographer, mode of technique and the population being studied upon.3,4,7,8 Literature review has shown that the most primitive diameter of portal vein was established as 6.3 ± 2.3mm.6 A cross sectional gray scale ultrasound assessment of portal vein in Ethiopian population was done, 1. Impact of anthropometrical parameters on portal vein diameter and liver size in a subset of Karachi based population

OBJECTIVE The purpose was to study the impact of anthropometrical parameters on portal vein diameter and liver size by ultrasound in a subset of Karachi population. METHODS Four hundred and fifty nine apparently healthy subjects were included in this cross sectional study. After recording weight and height of each subject, Portal vein diameter and both liver lobes were measured by gray scale ...

Angiografic and pressoric changes determined by splenectomy with left gastric vein ligature in mansoni schistosomiasis.

BACKGROUND In hepatosplenic schistosomiasis occurs diffuse hepatic fibrosis associated with venous congestion of the portal system resulting in hepatosplenomegaly. It can produce digestive hemorrhage caused by rupture of esophageal and stomach varices or peptic gastroduodenal mucosal lesions. AIM To study the effects of splenectomy and ligature of the left gastric vein on portohepatic hemodyn...

Treatment by splenectomy of a portal vein aneurysm in hepatosplenic schistosomiasis.

Portal vein aneurysm is a rare medical entity that can be caused by chronic hepatic diseases with portal hypertension. We describe a 45-year-old man with variceal bleeding from hepatosplenic schistosomiasis and an incidentally found intrahepatic aneurysm. Diagnosis was confirmed with non-invasive imaging exams, arteriography and liver biopsy. Following splenectomy, the aneurysm diameter decreas...

Duplex sonography study in schistosomiasis portal hypertension: characterization of patients with and without a history of variceal bleeding.

BACKGROUND Presinusoidal portal hypertension with frequent episodes of upper gastrointestinal variceal bleeding are hallmarks of hepatosplenic Mansons schistosomiasis; a clinical form that affects about 5% of Brazilians who are infected by Schistosoma mansoni. AIMS To evaluate duplex sonography findings in patients with hepatosplenic Mansons schistosomiasis with and without upper gastrointest...

Effect of splenectomy and ligature of the left gastric vein on portal hypertensive colopathy in carriers of surgical hepatosplenic schistosomiasis mansoni.

PURPOSE Esophageal variceal sclerotherapy and band ligation seem not to affect the endoscopic findings of Portal Hypertensive Colopathy (PHC) of cirrhotic patients. The aim was to assess the effect of splenectomy and ligature of the left gastric vein on the PHC in carriers of hepatosplenic schistosomiasis mansoni who underwent this surgery when they were between 9 and 18 year-old. METHODS Fou...
